Cardiovascular Diagnosis & Imaging
At North Knoxville Medical Center, we know how important it is to determine the presence of disease before symptoms occur. That's why we provide advanced cardiovascular imaging procedures and equipment. The team of experienced cardiology professionals can offer patients a wide range of procedures including:
- Cardiac catheterization, or coronary angiogram - An interventional cardiology procedure that provides real-time X-ray images (fluoroscopy) to show the heart’s pumping ability, the health of the valves and arteries, as well as measure blood pressure. This technique is also used to collect biopsies and blood samples.
- Cardiac CT - A cardiac imaging test that takes detailed X-ray pictures of the heart sometimes using IV contrast (dye) to visualize the details.
- Cardiac MRI - Uses a magnetic field, radio waves and computer to produce detailed pictures to help evaluate the heart’s structure and function.
- Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) - Measures the heart’s electrical activity by recording impulses to show how fast the heart is beating and the rhythm of the heartbeats using electrodes attached to the skin.
- Echocardiography - Also known as a cardiovascular ultrasound, this widely performed test assesses heart structure and function.
- CT-FFR (computed tomography - fractional flow reserve) - Provides a 3D model of coronary arteries to identify any potential blockages.
- Nuclear cardiac stress test - A noninvasive test that assesses blood-flow patterns to the heart both while at rest and during activity.
- PET scan (positron emission tomography) - Uses higher energy isotopes to achieve a better image of the heart than the standard nuclear camera.
- Stress echocardiography - A modified standard exercise treadmill test used to detect a decrease in blood flow due to narrowing coronary arteries.
- Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) - A special kind of echocardiogram where a transducer is placed in the esophagus to get very clear images of the heart and its structure using sound waves.
*All of the above cardiac procedures need a physician’s order.
