Tennova Healthcare - North Knoxville Medical Center Further Strengthens Gastroenterology Services with Additional Expertise

Powell, TN – Tennova Healthcare - North Knoxville Medical Center recently expanded the gastroenterology expertise on staff to include Chimezie Mbachi, M.D. This addition means that the Tennova Healthcare - East Market now has nine gastroenterologists on staff that serve a variety of locations including Knoxville, Powell, Newport and Morristown.
Dr. Mbachi comes to Tennova from New Haven, CT, where he completed his ACGME Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship with Yale New Haven Hospital after completing his ACGME residency with Cook County Health and Hospital System in Chicago, IL. He received his degree from the University of Nigeria Faculty of Medicine where he graduated top of his class in medical school. During his time at Yale New Haven Hospital, Dr. Mbachi worked under highly regarded Garcia Tsao, M.D., a well-known expert in digestive diseases, for three years. Dr. Mbachi’s accomplishments include twenty-five PubMed indexed publications; distinction in medical school, outstanding research poster awards from the American College of Gastroenterology and more.
“I knew I was on the right path when, during fellowship, I was able to intervene with a life saving procedure to stop a bleeding through an endoscopic procedure,” says Dr. Mbachi. “The positive and profound impact I can have on those experiencing digestive disease related problems is fulfilling and what propels me to continue striving for excellence in care for my community.”
Dr. Mbachi has come to Knoxville with his wife and two children, who he looks forward to experiencing the Knoxville area with. He stated that he and his family moved here not just because of what the area has to offer, but more importantly because of the people, that he and his family have been received well and he is excited about serving his new community.

Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. It involves a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. It includes common and important conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis. In essence, all normal activity and disease of the digestive organs is part of the study of Gastroenterology (ACG).
