Tennova Healthcare’s Knoxville Area Hospitals Nationally Recognized for their Commitment to Providing High-Quality Stroke Care
8/11/2025
The American Heart Association has recognized two Tennova Healthcare hospitals for their commitment to improving stroke care and managing chronic conditions through evidence-based treatment. Turkey Creek Medical Center received the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Award and the Target: Type 2 Diabetes™ Honor Roll Award, while North Knoxville Medical Center earned the Target: Stroke Bronze Award. These recognitions reflect Tennova’s dedication to delivering timely, research-driven care that improves outcomes and reduces disability. As part of the Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke initiative, these achievements highlight consistent adherence to nationally recognized guidelines that help minimize the long-term effects of stroke and even prevent death.
Both hospitals also met specific scientific guidelines as a Primary Stroke Center, featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department.
Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States, respectively, according to the American Heart Association 2025 Statistical Update. Studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines.
Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidence- and research-based guidelines. As a participant in the Get With The Guidelines programs, Turkey Creek Medical Center and North Knoxville Medical Center qualified for the achievements by demonstrating how their organization has committed to improving quality care.
“Tennova Healthcare is committed to improving care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines and streamlining processes to ensure timely and proper care for heart attacks and strokes,” Tony Benton, CEO of Tennova Healthcare East. “Get With The Guidelines programs make it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which helps us ensure more people in Knoxville experience longer, healthier lives.”
“These awards show Tennova Healthcare’s commitment to caring for those in their community who need cardiovascular care,” said Donald Lloyd-Jones, past volunteer president of the American Heart Association and current volunteer chair of the Association’s Quality Oversight Committee. “By following the American Heart Association’s quality improvement protocols, Tennova Healthcare helps realize our shared vision of improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates — a win for health care systems, families and communities.”
